The recent trend of IPO GMP always shows the history that people go through before investing in an IPO, but it does change with the market condition, demand, and subscription quantity.

According to the circular, the limit on SME IPO listing has been restricted to a maximum of 90% over the IPO price. This will not be applied on the main-board IPOs.

Disclaimer

The following below estimate IPO Grey Market Premium (GMP) as on a specific date and time, it keeps on changing frequently.

  • We do not provide any facilitation of buying and selling of IPO forms on the grey market.
  • Whereas, the face value of the IPO listing might be different due to the stock market conditions from the estimated price of IPO GMP.

Note: All the rates shown here are for educational purposes. Do not subscribe to an IPO based only on premium price as it may change before listing. Subscribe to an IPO based solely on the fundamentals of the companies.

What is IPO GMP?

An IPO GMP stands for the difference between the price at which IPO shares are traded in the grey market and the issue price set by the company. This is how it works: when a company is getting ready for an IPO, the price at which it will let its shares be issued is called the issue price. On the other hand, the price at which the same shares are traded prior to such shares being listed on the stock exchanges is called the grey market price. The period from filing by an issuer with the regulatory authorities and till it starts trading on the stock exchanges is referred to as the grey market period. A buyer in this period could sell and a seller could buy these unlisted shares without the help of any official channel or stock exchange.

The grey market is an unofficial market where one can buy and sell shares before their actual listing in a stock exchange. GMP is one indicator of the estimated investor sentiment toward an IPO.

If GMP is high, then the investor’s confidence in the company is reflected and its share price will surge after listing it in the stock exchange; a low GMP indicates investors are thinking negative about the company and the share price would go down when it lists. This is not always a good investment indicator to show how well the performance of the share price may go once the IPO is listed on the stock exchange. On this listing, various factors may come in to influence the share price, including the institutional demand or general market condition. GMP is just a measure of investor sentiment at a given time.

The actual performance of the shares will be determined by various factors such as company performance, general market conditions, among others. The IPO GMP, on the other hand, seems to attract the attention of investors due to one major factor. Therefore, in this paper, an in-depth effort is made towards rendering an understanding of GMP, IPO, and their significance in IPO grey market sentiments.

The IPO GMP indicates the market sentiment for the IPO. If the GMP is positive, it means that the shares traded above the issue price, which shows high demand for the IPO. A negative GMP will indicate that the shares traded below the issue price, showing that demand is weak.

Now, let us estimate how to find the listing price after involving a premium. Let the grey market rate for an IPO be ₹100 and the IPO price, loosely speaking, be ₹200. The estimated listing price will be around ₹300. And according to these calculations, the listing gain will be 50% of the IPO price. This may vary in the actual listing of an IPO, per the grey market indications, according to the bull/bear market or demand for the company’s shares. We have witnessed some IPOs that had lower grey markets but listed higher with gains, while a few IPOs in 2021 had higher grey markets but had lower listings. Since the grey market is always one of the strong factors in calculating IPO listing gains, we strongly suggest that investors take an update on the grey market rates for information purposes only and not base any trading decisions based on them.

Important Points to Consider about the Grey Market:

  • Unofficial grey market transactions include the IPO investors and stockbrokers.
  • The dealing is based on mutual trust.
Please review our analysis before you submit your IPO application.
  • Grey market rates are estimated and quoted or found from market investigators or professionals.
  • We advise not to trade on the unofficial market because it is illegal.
  • Kostak Rate: The premium one receives when he sells his IPO issue application to somebody else in an off-market transaction before the allotment of the issue or listing.
  • Do not subscribe to the IPO with the premium mentioned above. It may vary with the time before listing.
  • Subscribe only after considering the fundamentals of the company.

More About Grey Market Premium

The IPO Grey Market Premium, or, in short, IPO GMP, refers to the premium or additional price at which IPO shares are traded in the grey market before the official listing of the same on the stock exchange. It reflects the market’s perception about the prospective value and demand for the shares.

The so-called “grey market premium” or, in short, “IPO GMP” is the term describing the possible price estimation of an IPO in the IPO market.

It is unofficial, but investors use an IPO’s grey market price in order to estimate fixed gain for the stock. It works before the IPO listing and during days between the IPO start date and the allotment date. The grey market premium predictively estimates how well the IPO will fare on listing day with an estimated price.

What Factors are Influencing IPO GMP?

Fundamentally, a bunch of factors contribute to the IPO Grey Market Premium.

  • Fundamentals of the Company: Strong financial base, growth potential, and credible management take GMP higher.
Market Conditions: The general feeling of the market, sector performance, and economic conditions are other factors that might affect investor appetite for IPOs. Supply and demand dynamics: The availability of shares and interest by investors are the main determinants for GMP.

What is Kostak Rate?

Kostak Rate is an amount that one investor pays to the seller of an IPO application before it gets listed. Kostak rates react similarly to how the grey market does. One can sell and buy their entire IPO application on kostak rates outside the market to fix their profit. The investor receives an IPO allotment or not; the buyer must pay the Kostak rates for an IPO.

In case he is selling 5 applications for an IPO at ₹ 1000 each, he earns a profit of ₹ 5000. Even on receiving an allotment in two applications, his profit remains the same, ₹ 5000. In case the stock is sold for close to ₹ 10000, the investor who bought the application must get the remaining ₹ 5000 profit. This is a very safe way of selling your application on the IPO grey market.

What is Subject to Sauda?

The Kostak rate is the rate at which the Subject to Sauda on application refers to the amount that is decided upon when an investor gets an official allotment on the IPO application. It means if someone buys or sells an IPO application on subject of sauda then somebody gets said amount in case of allotment granted otherwise saudas get canceled themselves. Here, one cannot pre-determine his profit because everything depends upon the allotment amount. If in case you got an allotment and sold the application for about ₹ 10,000/- on listing day if you earned the profit of about ₹ 15,000/- then you will have to pay ₹ 5,000/- to the buyer.

How to Calculate Grey Market Premium?

The IPO GMP stands for the grey market premium Pre-issue IPO price at which trading happens in the grey markets before the IPO listing process is ignited. It does various calculations, such as the company’s performance, demand in the grey market, and subscription chance. Now, suppose the IPO price is fixed at ₹200, and given a grey market rate of ₹ 100, the IPO might get listed at ₹300, that is ₹200+₹100. This, though, is just an assumption, and the actual listing might vary from the price in the grey market.

Are Grey Market Stocks Safe?

It depends on the broker or trading person, and according to us, it is not safe. The grey market trading is absolutely at your own risk. Prices may show more ups and downs and hence use caution. As we suggest, only refer to the IPO GMP for listing gain purposes. Do a wise decision and trade in the primary market post listing.

How Do I Buy / Sell IPO Application in Grey Market?

Grey market is connected with no official people or businesses. Certain brokers sell and buy the IPO application using the Kostak Rates or Subject to Sauda Rates depending on the IPO’s GMP. One may look out for local brokers functioning as mediators between buyers and sellers and trading IPO applications on the grey market. Be aware of the current rates before buying or selling.

Significance of IPO GMP

The IPO Grey Market Premium reflects market sentiments and the projected value of the IPO shares. It will help potential investors gauge the demand for the IPO and the premium they would have to pay on top when it opens for subscription. Yet, one should not forget that GMP does not guarantee future performance.
